CADILLAC MOUNTAIN'S REAL SUMMIT

CADILLAC MOUNTAIN - ACADIA NATIONAL PARK

If you are like most visitors to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, you no doubt took photos, selfies, and marveled in the fact that you can stood on the summit of Cadillac Mountain, but did you really?  In name only you can depart the majestic mountain with victory in hand, but the true summit or highest point on Cadillac Mountain is not found where all the crowds  gather and flashes go off like a Hollywood gala, to find the true summit, or highest point on the mountain one has to go behind the gift shop, to the point where a radio antenna  is   located, look for a U.S.  Geological survey medal is  connected to the ledge - that marks the highest spot  on Cadillac Mountain.

  1. That USGS bench mark is designated K 24. You can find the official description and my notes and photos here:

    https://thesurveystation.com/surveymarks/k-24/

There are at least 6 other geodetic survey markers on Cadillac - two of which are not disks. (I'm not including in my total the property corner markers that can also be found on Cadillac.)

Three of the disks are very close to K 24; they are a triangulation station designated MOUNT DESERT RESET and its two associated reference marks. Check out my website if you are curious about the others!

  2. so generally speaking, these survey markers show up on mountain summits and peaks? I am not sure what type of marker it is but there is a hill over by the Bass Harbor Lighthouse and when I lived over there in Bass Harbor I use to hike over that hill and about where I would consider the peak there is a round marker well attached to the granite there. n Thanks so much for the information

  3. They are often found on mountain peaks, but in many other locations too. There are at least 12 in Bar Harbor, right in town!

What is the hill you're describing? Can you give coordinates?

There is another triangulation station in the woods just northeast of the lighthouse. The station is a bolt and it has two reference mark disks nearby.
